THE FLAG HALYARD CHAIR, 1950

The Flag Halyard Chair by Hans J. Wegner designed in 1950 is truly one of a kind. Made of solid stainless steel, 240 meters specially developed flag line and a long-haired sheep skin it is the ultimate relaxing luxury!

"We must be careful that everything doesn't get so dreadfully serious. We must play - but we must play in a serious way!" - Hans J. Wegner

Despite the futuristic appearance, the basic idea and the shape of the chair was conceived on a hot summer afternoon under quite trivial conditions. While the kids were playing in the shallow water on the beach, Wegner was digging himself into the sand building a comfortable chair to enjoy the holidays.

If you wish to select the sheepskin for your Flag Halyard Chair, you can see all available sheepskin following the bellow link. When you place the order at your dealer simply tell them to pass the number of your selection to the PP office, and we will have that particular sheepskin shipped with your chair.

Please have in mind that the unlikely event of two customers reserving the same sheepskin simultaneous might happen.
In 2002, PP Møbler received "Bo Bedre's" Classics Award for resuming production of this lounge chair.

With The Flag Halyard Chair, Wegner acknowledges the early modernists such as Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Marcel Breuer, and proves that he too masters designs in stainless steel. Despite this gesture, the chair is still decidedly Wegner. The chair's surfaces are made of plaited flag halyard with the longhaired sheepskin softening the industrial sharpness of the steel, adding comfort.

However, the story behind the design is more than just a dialogue of art history. The shape of the chair's seat was conceived during a family holiday in Århus, Denmark. The family spent many days on the beach, and using sand Wegner spent a lot of time there experimenting with the shape of the seat. The anecdote shows us that Wegner was always working - but it also shows us that playing was crucial in his work process.

The Flag Halyard Chair´s seat, back and arm rests is stringed with a 240 meter long unbroken piece of flag line. To obtain a beautiful result a custom made Flag line has been developed in close collaboration between PP Møbler and Århus Possement Fabrik A/S. The flag line is made out of natural flax plaited around a core of static inlay strong enough to avoid unnecessary stretching over time. It takes a craftsman a full working day to prepare the flagline and string the chair.

The Flag Halyard Chair is available in natural flax or natural flax dyed black.
